Limestone House

This stunning site in Remuera had a gentle slope down to the cliff. The architect wanted the pool to extend out from the house, enhancing the view. This required reclaiming real estate, a practise we do often. To achieve this we built a palisade wall across the rear of the site (facing the view) comprised of concrete piles with a capping beam and blockwork retaining walls on top. This is then backfilled using Polyrock – a lightweight fill made of polystyrene (earth is too heavy and will cause the cliff to collapse). The pool is piled too (it often surprises people that a pool is lighter than earth). We gained an extension of 11m across the full width of the property.

Upon completion, the neighbour asked us to reclaim his land too.
